Recap

by Jonathan Totten

Vikes (Whitman) ball movement and shooting too much for Lanham to handle as they go down 71-48.

Vikes got off to a good shooting start, knocking down their first two threes and leading Lanham 10-2 after three minutes of play. Vikes remarkable shooting boosted them to a 22-7 lead over Lanham as they moved the ball around well, utilizing the full 30 seconds almost every play to score a bucket. On the other end, ‘26 forward Jordan Houchins kept Lanham competitive, scoring 10 points on 5-8 shooting in the first half. Lanham combo guard Tre Ray (‘25) also contributed 7 points on 3-5 shooting in the first half. However, Vikes unselfish play improved their lead to 32-11 with three minutes left to play in the first. ‘24 guard Thomas Farrell was a key contributor for Vikes, dishing the ball out well and scoring 10 points on 3-3 shooting from the field. Vikes finished the half shooting 53% from three and 52% from the field while Lanham finished the half shooting 28% from the field. The score at the half was 36-19, Vikes up.

Lanham slowed Vikes down a bit, and were able to cut their lead down to 15 thanks to their physicality in the second half, scoring 12 points in the paint, 28 in total. Vikes expanded their lead back to 20 as Lanham failed to hit open shots and as four of their players had contributed points in the double digits. This includes Thomas Farrell (‘24) who scored 18 points in the competition on a perfect 5-5 from the field, 4-4 from three, and 4-4 from the free throw line. Vikes had a 54-29 lead with eight minutes left to play. With four minutes left to play in the game, Lanham hit their first three to cut the lead down to 23. In fact, Lanham’s shooting improved in the second half, going 30% from the field. Despite Lanham’s second half efforts, Vikes went on to win the game 71-48 and finished the game shooting 60% from three.

Vikes (Whitman) will face Severn next Monday as they fish for their sixth win, and Lanham will look to bounce back against Fairfax Christian next Monday and get their fifth win.
