Championship Saturday finally arrived at the summer league, and this year’s championship was a must watch box office event between the 10th seed Georgetown Prep Hoyas and the undefeated number 1 seed and host Dematha. Both teams had a difficult playoff route to make it to the final day of the summer league. Dematha had to beat hard nosed teams such as Hayfield and Gonzaga and Georgetown Prep upsetting Takoma Academy and Landon.
For Dematha, despite being without starting ‘23 G Jaden Winston, and losing F ‘24 Malcom Thomas to injury, they jumped in front early, leading 24-20 going into half. Georgetown Prep on the other hand was simply not going to go down without a fight, forcing overtime after a huge 3 from ‘25 G Akeem Clark. In similar fashion to regulation, despite finding themselves trailing late, Georgetown Prep refused to go down without a fight. However despite their fighting spirit Dematha found themselves hoisting the Capitol Hoops Summer League championship trophy for the second year in a row. Dematha’s Mason So earned The summer league playoff MVP after finishing the championship game with 16 points.
