This season, Capitol Hoops Summer League+ has partnered with Cerebro Sports to begin tracking and recording advanced statistics. In addition to tracking standard per-game statistics, Cerebro calculates statistics per 40 minutes and usage rate. The statistics mentioned in this article are calculated purely with box scores, there is no human subjectivity in the formulaic calculation of these stats.

Cerebro calculates two all-encompassing statistics, called RAM and C-RAM.

RAM is an overall rating score (from 0-1000+, with scores above 1000 being particularly exceptional), calculated solely through box score statistics. It considers the player’s efficiency and volume.

C-RAM provides context for how well a player is performing relative to the rest of the league. It runs on a 0-10+ scale, with scores above 10 being the best of the best players in the league. The average C-RAM throughout the league is always 5.5, which means that if certain players move up, others move down. In other words, it is a zero-sum statistic.

More specific skills are graded in the 5-Metric Suite (5MS), which includes Pure Scoring Prowess (PSP), 3PE (3-Point Efficiency), FGS (Floor General Skills), ATR (Around the Rim), and DSI (Defensive Stat Impact). The 5MS can be used to consider a player’s archetype, and are rated on a scale of 0-100+. They are all calculated in such a way that is independent of a player’s position or height.

Pure Scoring Prowess (PSP) combines scoring volume and efficiency in order to create a scoring metric that works independently of a player’s role or usage rate.

3-Point Efficiency (3PE), similar to PSP, considers the balance of volume and efficiency for 3-point shooting, in which “high percentage, low volume shooters on a continuum alongside low percentage, high volume shooters.”

Floor General Skills (FGS) is calculated to determine a player’s playmaking ability and comfort in decision-making scenarios. It considers a balance of assists, turnovers, steals, as well as minutes played and usage rate.

Around the Rim (ATR) is formulated with 2-point efficiency, offensive and defensive rebounds, blocks, and fouls. As the name suggests, ATR provides an idea of how well a player plays around the rim.

Defensive Stat Impact (DSI) combines “possession-winning actions (steals, blocks, offensive rebounds) against defensive efficiency (fouls).” DSI helps users understand how a player affects a team’s defense, as well as their effectiveness in their role.
