DeMatha Catholic High School has found their guy. Following Head Coach Mike K. Jones’ departure to Virginia Tech, the national powerhouse has hired a new Head Coach. Mike G. Jones III, no relation to his predecessor, is looking to bring the culture he and his staff built at St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes School to a new program. While it might have been a surprise to many in the DMV that DeMatha didn’t hire one of their own, Jones and his staff are up to the challenge. After reaching three state titles and winning one at St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes, Jones decided to keep his coaching staff together. DeMatha’s new Assistant Coach, Isaac Mcneil, spoke about the importance of players working hard everyday, and that their preparation is what will separate them from their opponents. Jones and McNeil aren’t concerned with any pressure that comes with such a demanding job. McNeil is simply “grateful for the opportunity to work,” and to “get kids to believe in themselves.” The coaching staff is looking forward to producing a dynamic scoring team that will defend aggressively at a high level, which will be on full display against The Potomac School and star guard Khalil Williams. Whether that is pressing 84’ or trapping everything in the halfcourt, Jones is not afraid to go deep on his bench. This is a huge hire for DeMatha and an even bigger opportunity for Mike Jones and his staff. After losing a player to Oak Hill just in the last week, the Stags have their eyes on what’s in front of them. They are totally committed to the work ahead, as is their new head coach, who knows “you can’t cheat the game.”
