Recap

by Jonathan Totten

Severn uses dominant second half performance to beat the Seahawks (South River) 85-55.

The Seahawks hit two threes within the first minute of play. Seahawks shooting guard Shane Corkill (‘24) got off to a hot start, hitting two threes back to back. Both teams proved early on they could shoot, trading jumpers from the start. On the other hand, Severn used their quickness to get buckets in the paint and the midrange also worked for them in transition. Severn gained their first lead at the 9:15 mark (19-18). Less than a minute later, Seahawks small forward James Crimaudo (‘24), who went from 4-9 from three in the first half, hit a three to put them up by three, regaining the lead. As both teams were evenly matched in guard play and shooting ability, the score was tied at 23 with five minutes left to go in the first half. Severn took the lead again after a Seahawk turnover, but the Sehawks responded with a three. Severn took a 6 point lead with three minutes left to play in the first half. They then took a commanding 14 point lead with a minute left to play in the first as they turned their shooting up a notch and the Seahawk’s shooting waned. Severn finished the half shooting 55% from the field while the Seahawks finished the half shooting 31% from the field. Severn had a 14 point lead heading into the half with a score of 45-31.

Severn didn’t let their first half lead get to their heads. In fact, it fueled them. As they proved they could shoot in the first half, the lane opened up which allowed for them to drive in the lane for physical buckets. Seahawks small forward James Crimaudo (‘24) cooled off in the second half, only scoring 5 points compared to his 14 points scored in the first half. On the other hand, Severn guard Jayden Thomas (‘26) scored 15 points on 6-8 shooting in the second half. Severn had additional help from ‘25 guard Daniel Growney who contributed 16 points in the competition on 7-11 shooting. This guard play along with a team field goal shooting of 48% resulted in a 61-37 Severn lead with eight minutes to go in the game. The second half was very one-sided as the Seahawks struggled from the field, shooting 20%, and going many plays without scoring a single bucket. Severn eclipsed a 30 point lead with 45 seconds left in the game and as they put on a dominant performance in the second half, the final score of the game was 85-55.

Severn will look to stay strong and get their fourth win against the Vikes (Whitman) next Monday at 5:00 pm. Meanwhile, the Seahawks (South River) will look to get their first win in their last game of the season against Clarksville (River Hill) this Wednesday evening.
