Our Capitol Hoops Summer League Player of the Week is Daniel Brown, and the honorable mentions are Declan Conley, Shawn Dupont, Jared Jeffers, Taylor Jones, and Dylan Fletcher.

Player of the Week: Daniel Brown–John Carroll

Daniel Brown is a 6-foot guard in the class of 2029. Daniel plays for Hartford County Elite in AAU ball. He was on JV last year for John Carroll but after this week he has put himself in a conversation for a varsity spot. Daniel’s strengths offensively is using his natural explosiveness to drive into the paint and create opportunities for his teammates. Defensively he uses his explosiveness and speed to disrupt defenders and get a high amount of steals. Earlier in his summer league campaign in a loss to South River 62-88, he had a double-double with 19 points and 10 steals. The rising sophomore led the Patriots (5-3) to a 2-0 record this week where he combined for 46 points, 11 rebounds, 9 assists, 3 steals, and 2 blocks. His highlight game came on June 8 in a win over the Buccaneers (Kent Island) 85-60 where he dropped 30 points, 7 rebounds, 2 assists, and 1 steal. With this monster of a week for this underclassmen guard, he is now averaging 16.6 points, 5 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 3.1 steals. He currently leads the team in points and free throw percentage as he is currently shooting 76.9% from the line. After this week Daniel has definitely asserted himself as one of the better underclassmen guards in summer league. John Carroll ended the season with a win over Screaming Eagles (Seneca Valley) 63-54.

 

Players of the Week: Declan Conley–Potomac

Declan Conley is a 6-foot-4 guard in the class of 2028. Declan plays for team AKT on the AAU circuit. Declan’s strengths offensively is using his size as a bigger guard to his advantage. Other strengths are his ball handling and his ability to create for others. Defensively his strengths are using his size to get rebounds. Declan only played one game this week where he put up a pretty solid performance in a win over the Vikes (Walt Whitman) where he had 25 points, 2 rebounds, and 1 steal. This performance boosted his average on season to 15.3 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 2.3 assists. Conley ended the season leading the team in steals at 1.8. Declan looks to put himself in the conversation as one of the best Virginia guards in his class. Potomac School ( 8-0) ended their season against Walt Whitman and will look to contend for a summer league title. 

 

Shawn Dupont–Glenelg

Shawn Dupont is a 6-foot-6 forward in the class of 2028. Shawn plays for Top Tier Basketball in AAU ball. Shawn’s strengths offensively are his ability to use all of his frame to dominate inside the paint. Dupont’s strengths defensively are to use his long wingspan to get steals and blocks. The rising junior played two games this week combining for 39 points, 16 rebounds, 5 steals, and 4 assists. His highlight game came in the win over Wildcats (Walter Johnson) where he had 21 points, 8 rebounds, 2 steals, and 1 assists. In his second summer league he is averaging 13.9 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 1.4 steals. Shawn leads his team in points, rebounds, and blocks. Glenelg County (3-4) last game is against Clarksville (River Hill) at 6:15 at DeMatha.

 

Jared Jeffers–DeMatha

Jared Jeffers is a 6-foot-11 center in the class of 2027. He plays for Team Takeover on the AAU circuit. Offensively, Jared’s strengths is his dominant interior presence which is his combination of size, mobility, and touch around the basket allows him to finish at a high level. Defensively he’s a great interior defender who can use his frame to get blocks, steals, and take charges. Jeffers led DeMatha (5-1) to a big win this week over Clinton Grace 89-61. Jared put up his best summer league performance of his career scoring 21 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 assists. He achieved a personal high in points and tied a personal high in assists in his second summer league campaign. Jeffers is averaging 12.6 points, 5.8 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocks, and 1 steal. The rising senior leads the team in rebounds and blocks. The three-star recruit, ranked as Maryland’s No. 6 player, in his class looks to continue to assert himself as one of the best big men prospects in the DMV. DeMatha has a doubleheader to close out their summer schedule on June 17, first against the Purple Storm (Cardozo) then Spalding to round it out.

 

Taylor Jones–Severn 

Taylor Jones is a 6-foot-5 forward in the class of 2027 and plays for New World in AAU. Taylor’s strengths offensively is using his high basketball IQ to take smart shots and exploit the defense. Defensively his strengths are his high defensive activity that allows him to challenge passing lanes, pressure ball handlers, and play help defense. Jones led Severn (3-4) to a 2-0 record this week and combined for 42 points, 22 rebounds, 2 steals, and 1 assist. The rising senior highlight came in the win over Swarming Hornets (Damascus) where he had 19 points, 14 rebounds, and 2 blocks. In his second summer league he is averaging 15.6 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks. He leads the team in rebounds and blocks. Taylor hopes that this winter that he can take this performance with him and lead the Admirals to a MIAA championship. Severn finished their season with the win over Damascus. 

 

Dylan Fletcher–Flint Hill

Dylan Fletcher is a 6-foot guard in the class of 2027 and plays for Washington Warriors in AAU. Dylan’s strengths offensively are using his natural given athleticism to be aggressive in his shot selection. He is able to do that by using his speed to beat people to his spot. His strengths defensively are using his physicality to be a big force inside the paint. The rising senior helped lead Flint Hill to a 1-0 record this week in a win over the Cavaliers (Carter G. Woodson). In that game Fletcher had 26 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists, and 2 steals. In his fourth summer league, Dylan is averaging 12.1 points, 4 assists, 3.7 rebounds, and 1.9 steals. He currently leads the team in assists and steals. At 7-0, Fletcher and teammate Blake Fitzgerald are a duo to be reckoned with in the summer league playoffs. Flint Hill will finish the season against Yorktown on June 16 in Hayfield.
