Recap

By Darius Gordon

The most anticipated matchup of the day featured powerhouse programs DeMatha and Bullis in a gritty, defensive showdown. With star players like Christian Proctor and Xavier Skipworth taking the floor, all eyes were on how this battle would unfold — and it didn’t disappoint. The game opened with a defensive slugfest, as both teams struggled to generate offense. Bullis led 4–3 with just under 10 minutes left in the first half, with neither side able to establish a rhythm. DeMatha tried to free their shooters off screens, but the shots weren’t falling early. Despite the low scoring, intensity was high on both ends of the floor. Bullis closed the gap late in the first half with a key three-pointer from their No. 5, but DeMatha held on to a slim 22–20 lead going into the break. Surprisingly, DeMatha’s Christian Proctor was held scoreless at the half, while Bullis’ Danny Abass kept his team alive with an impressive 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting. The second half picked up the pace quickly. Abass came out firing, hitting a three to bring his total to 18 and tying the game early. Both teams traded baskets, and momentum swung back and forth. Bullis guard Xavier Skipworth impressed with his poise, court vision, and silky mid-range game, including an and-one to give his team a two-point lead with just over 8 minutes remaining. Foul trouble plagued DeMatha as Christian Proctor picked up his fourth foul and was forced to the bench, raising questions about how long the coaching staff would risk keeping him out. In his absence, Donovan Wright stepped up in a major way. With a series of tough layups, he helped DeMatha regain the lead and extend it to seven with under five minutes left. Bullis stayed within striking distance and, with just 30 seconds remaining, Finey Billy hit a clutch three-pointer to tie the game at 52–52. But DeMatha responded with poise, executing late and securing the 54–52 win in a thrilling finish.

Notable Performances:

  • Danny Abass (DeMatha): 22 points, 15 rebounds

  • Jayden Smothers (DeMatha): 10 points

  • Xavier Skipworth (Bullis): 13 points, 2 assists, 3 steals

This matchup lived up to the hype, showcasing heart, talent, and clutch performances. DeMatha walks away with a key win, while Bullis proves they’re a force to be reckoned with.
